Few brands will have worked with so many artists: in almost 140 years, more than 350 exceptional signatures constitute an incomparable heritage, a unique collection of its kind.
How to translate these works into crystal sculptures? Therein lies the whole secret of Daum, an exceptional manufacturer, a very learned workshop, a laboratory of wonders, a designer of unparalleled objects.
The technique of crystal paste is rare and very old.
This technique dates back to 5,000 years BC (it can be found in the tombs of pharaohs). Long forgotten, it was rediscovered by Daum in 1900 then reworked in 1968. The process is extremely delicate to handle. The pieces obtained by this fusion of pieces of crystal mixed in a mold have a grain, a material and a softness of contours that cannot be obtained with blown glass.
Specificity in Daum, copied but never equaled, crystal paste, a precious material which gives the object a sculptural dimension, has continued to develop. Crystal paste has the particularity of adding translucency to the shapes it reproduces. The brilliance of this material, the intensities of colors and its shaded tones give it all its singularity.
Crystal paste contains almost 30% lead. The material arises from a specially made crystal in pots. Several factors influence the final result of the color: the weight of the materials, the proportions of the mixtures, the chemical reactions of certain minerals and metals, the rise in temperature as well as the cooling of the furnaces.
Thanks to the crystal foundry and lost wax casting process developed by Daum, the reproduction of the original piece is perfect and in accordance with the artist’s wishes. Today Daum is the only crystal maker in the world to be able to create this exceptional material so perfectly. A changing substance, crystal paste has been bending to all the whims of the imagination of master glassmakers for over a century. It is through mastery and constant research that world-famous masterpieces are born.
