Philippe Starck - Baccarat Designer
Philippe Starck's works have been exhibited in some of the most prestigious museums. The traces of his prolific production can be seen all over the world.
In 2003, Baccarat approached Starck to design the new headquarters of the Crystal Factory inside the private residence of Marie-Laure de Noailles in Place des Etats-Unis. His idea for this project was 'a diamond found in the ashes'.
This concept allowed him to play with the contrasts between the beauty and purity of the crystal and the rough concrete of the boutique walls.
Philippe Starck impertinently revisits the great traditions of Baccarat, already shaken by the success of the Place des Etats-Unis location and its now famous black crystal chandelier. Playing with the paradoxes and contrasts between the diffracted light of transparent crystal and the sombre shimmer of onyx, the light of day and the darkness of darkness, Philippe Starck harks back to Baccarat's forgotten Black Crystal tradition, reinventing it with his usual artistic flair.
With the Darkside collection, Philippe Starck invites us to explore the darker side of nature from which, of course, the light of crystal springs forth in all its brilliance.
"From sand comes crystal, from crystal comes light, from light comes red, red, the colour of Love." Philippe Starck
