Loet Vanderveen

Loet Vanderveen was born in Rotterdam in the Netherlands in 1921. He Lived next to the Zoo and that became an important factor in his life. He spent many hours of his younger years there until he developed a certain intimacy with the various species. When the Zoo was bombed during World War II, many animals were injured or died. This was devastating for Loet. This led him many years later to capture in his drawings of him the "essence" of the animals he had felt as a child. He escaped from Holland during the German occupation and took refuge in Great Britain where he enlisted in the RAF. After the war Loet became a designer working in Zurich, London and New York. In New York he met Fong Chow, curator of the Far East department at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Loet moved to Big Sur where he built his house and his studio and began his career drawing animals in ceramic and bronze. The new Baccarat Crystal Collection and Haviland Porcelain Collection are current examples of how Vandervoen has continually reinvented himself over the course of his 50-year artistic career.
